#493: Wall Street Secrets, with Your Rich BFF Vivian Tu

Do you ever wonder what happens behind closed doors on Wall Street?

Vivian Tu, also known as Your Rich BFF, is here to spill the tea.

Vivian grew up in a modest immigrant family. After college, she found herself working insane hours on Wall Street after college.

While working on Wall Street, Vivian saw some weird things.

Once, a coworker stumbled hungover into the office after a trip to Atlantic City, carrying a duffel bag with thousands of dollars in cash inside.

Vivian realized that there’s a group of high-income and high-net-worth people who handle money in drastically different ways than she learned in her frugal upbringing.

She shares these insights — gleaned from her Wall Street days — in today’s podcast episode.

The Diderot Effect: How Buying Fuels Itself

In mid-1700’s France, there lived an artist and writer on the brink of poverty.

His name was Denis Diderot. He had been born into an established family, the son of a successful craftsman, and he had obliged the social standing of his birth by pursuing a formal education. He obtained a Master of Arts in philosophy, and seemed bound for a respectable profession in clergy or law.

Here are 17 lessons that can improve your money and life.

#1: Money Can’t Make You Happy, But Lack of Money Can Make You Unhappy
They say, “money can’t make you happy.” But that’s false.

Researchers have examined the link between money and happiness — and guess what? Money can make you happy, to an extent. Multiple studies found a significant correlation between money and happiness among people in low-to-middle income brackets.

Why Money Won’t Solve Your Problems

A few years ago, my friend J.D. Roth told me a story that’s stuck in my mind ever since. ⠀
⠀
During his 20’s and early 30’s, J.D. was broke and in credit card debt. But in his mid-30’s, he started a business, and within three years, he sold it for a […]

8 Money Myths That Might Be Holding You Back

I live in a two-bedroom condo. It’s furnished with a used couch and used coffee table.

My shoe rack is made from old cardboard boxes glued together.

Almost everything else in my home is from Craigslist, Amazon and Overstock. I consider IKEA to be a splurge.

My favorite hobbies are hiking and camping (free […]

I’d like to explain … well … why this website exists.

Afford Anything promotes a handful of radical ideas:

#1: You can create financial independence — the ability to quit trading-time-for-money, because your investments cover your bills.

#2: Financial independence comes from passive income.

#3: To build passive income, you’ll first need to create a […]
