Harry Campbell used to make good money as an aerospace engineer.
He wanted to earn pocket change on the side, so he started driving for Uber and Lyft. He made $20 – $30 an hour, but he noticed that some days and times were consistently more profitable than others.
He wanted to learn how to maximize his time and profits. He looked for websites or podcasts that teach Uber and Lyft drivers how to boost their income. He couldn’t find any.
So Harry launched The Rideshare Guy, a website and podcast that shares money-making and time-saving tips for rideshare drivers. His audience grew rapidly, and he started selling courses and promoting affiliate links. Last year, the site brought in $200,000.
As you might imagine, Harry quit his engineering job to focus full-time on The RideShare Guy.
In this episode, Harry explains that it’s easy to become a driver for Uber or Lyft. There are no education requirements other than a driver’s license, clean driving record, insurance coverage among other information.
While you can’t set your own rate as a driver, you can choose when you want to drive. The average rideshare driver makes about $10 – $20 an hour, but Harry shares these tips to make sure you are profitable:
- Airport runs: Pick passengers up between 4am – 6am. It is very likely they want to go to the airport, which makes for a quick trip because nobody else is on the road.
- Party Hours: Young people burning off steam typically bring more demand for share rides on Friday and Saturday nights.
- The Ride of Shame: Guess who needs a ride back to their cars after a night of partying? That’s right – the Party Hours passengers. Harry says these are great passengers, “They like to sit in the back and are very quiet. Just give them a water and you’ll be a king to them.”
