If you’re a longtime listener, you might remember J.D. Roth, founder of Get Rich Slowly and owner of Money Boss, from Episode 20.
In this previous interview, J.D. shared how he went from being in debt to financially independent.
Today, he’s back for a special edition of the podcast.
J.D. and I didn’t actually record an interview for this episode. Instead, we recorded one of our private mini-mastermind conversations, where we talk candidly about our businesses.
By listening to this episode, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on in the Afford Anything and Money Boss world – without any filters.
This episode is online-business-centric. If you’re not interested in online entrepreneurship, you might want to skip it.
But if you want a peek backstage at building a digital business, you’ll want to listen in, as J.D. and I discuss:
- The resources we use in our businesses
- How to prioritize the tasks that need to get done in your personal and business life
- The power of hiring a team for your business
- The process of creating a video course
- How to maximize your team so talent and time isn’t wasted
- Why it’s better to be a master at a few things than mediocre at a lot of things
- How to manage the costs of starting an online business
- Why thinking is the most important thing you can do for your business
- and much more!

I also want to take a moment to thank the sponsor for this episode.
If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ve heard me interview many best-selling authors. Before I interview these guests, I need to read or refresh my memory of their books.
Sitting down to physically read the books can take a long time. That’s why I listen to their audiobooks, thanks to my subscription to an audiobook service called Audible. If you want to give them a try for free, head to audible.com/trynow for a free 30-day trial.

Great as always to hear from JD! I also started blogging back around 2000 (though my personal finance blog didn’t come about until 2007 – but even that feels old hat now that the 10th anniversary is coming up!), and it really does feel like a different world in some ways. But the core tenets still live on: great content is still king, and the more you put real work into your blog, the better it will be.
This is the problem I have with investing time/money into my blog: my other clients (the ones who will pay me for something today) always seem more urgent and important than work that will pay dividends later. It’s hard to justify working on my side business if there’s anything at all I could be working on (and billing) for a client. I need to find a way to work some “my projects” time into my workweek.

Very good episode! Thank You! I have been listening to your podcasts for couple of weeks now, right after I discovered you via one link posted in one women’s investors facebook page and I have been seriously addicted since then. First I started listening to the podcast while doing my exercise. I managed to double my jogging distance as well as get out on the track more often. Literally overnight I managed to increase my weekly kilometers by 3x! In the last episode with J.D Roth you gave some good examples how to say no to meet-up requests from your audience. My personal struggle currently as a stay-at-home-mother-of-three-under-age-of-four is how to keep and manage my personal relationships with my close friends while trying get most out of my timetable for personal financial growth which is my number one topic currently. It’s a real headache and I feel a shitty friend for quite some time already. How do people manage that?

Paula, absolutely one of your best podcasts here!!! Love the “mastermind” theme and I got a lot of good ideas to use myself just by listening to you and JD toss around various ideas/tools/time-mgmt-techniques. I am currently reading Cal Newport’s Deep Work book and will hopefully get even more techniques to use to become a better/more successful person.
Thanks again,
Rick
