#6: How to Transition from Hustler to Entrepreneur

hustler to entrepreneur

How do you transition from a side-hustle to a full-on entrepreneur? Jay and I tackle that question in today’s episode.

A “side hustle” is a microbusiness that you run during your off-time from your primary work. You’re not trying to start the next Hot Company; you’re not looking for venture capital or angel investors.

Your side hustle could be as simple as walking dogs, freelance writing, graphic design or social media management. Ideally it’ll boost your income by a few hundred — or a few thousand — every month. Once your side hustle gains traction, it could scale into a full-time business.

Learn more on today’s episode.

Haha yeah, we need to work on that one. We’re both super A.D.D. and get easily excited about the different paths these convos go down 🙂 We’ll get better over time!

Personally I don’t mind all of the rabbit holes that you two go down on this show. But I need something to listen to at work so it doesn’t matter to me how long it is. And I’ve found that a lot of the crazy paths that you take end up yielding more golden nuggets of info than what you have “scheduled” to talk about.

For me, the biggest factor or leaving the corporate life would be the fear of not making it on my own then not being able to find a job that was equivalent or better than the one that I left. I would have to have an experience like J. did to have this happen.

Glad you’re enjoying the rabbit holes 🙂

And you’re right – made leaving a LOT easier when the decision was completely made for me. No wondering “what if” anymore! Plus felt like it was then *really* the time to go.

But tons of people do quit on their own and make it just fine 🙂 I think it’s mostly about finding your “thing” on the side, growing it, loving it, being comfortable with it, making money with it, and THEN leaving the 9-5 to work on it full-time. Much less scary than quitting and then starting from scratch on day one.

I felt the difference when I went on my own, but the work itself was pretty much the same – just had more time to work on it! 🙂

Hope you reach that point too!

I am loving both of your blogs and now the podcasts. We have only one credit card – but it bugs me and I want to pay it off. Since I am taking the “1% challenge” I thought I would “question” it, and called our card company. They took 3% off of the rate, effective immediately! I figure that makes up for missing out on January’s 1%. Now, on to March…….thanks for the motivation and the suggestions…..

Really enjoyed this podcast (sorry for the delay – just listening to them bit by bit after being a regular reader on the blogs), particularly because it covered each of your own personal stories about how you developed your own current entrepreneurial positions. I think that is important since a lot of people may think they know the X’s and O’s for starting a business, but are afraid to actually take the first step to do so. Hearing actual stories about how it can be done, especially if they start from humble beginnings, I think helps give people the courage they actually need to get started.

Again – thank you and looking forward to the rest of the podcasts, even if I am about 3 months late to the party…

I know I’m late to the party, but I just discovered this about a week. This is the first podcast I have ever listened to and its awesome. I like the dynamic between you two.

I used to think personal finance was black and white, but you two both make valid arguments. Makes me think its really about making your finances work for your personal situation.

Love how you guys walked through your origin stories, both the good and the bad. Some people tend to leave out the bad so thanks for giving an accurate picture to anyone looking to move from a side hustle (micro-business) to full-time.

Anyway, love it and can’t wait to listen/read more.

Oh by the way Paula, if you haven’t been to Albania yet. I highly recommend it. Lived there for two years and absolutely loved it. The people are awesome and it so untapped by tourists it makes for a unique place to visit. Just food for thought.
