Today’s episode is one of the most raw, real, heartfelt episodes we’ve done.
Jay’s stint as a co-host is coming to an end. The show must go on, though! Paula will carry the podcast into an awesome future, and Jay will be our most enthusiastic fan.
In this episode, Jay and Paula talk about “quitting” (or “pivoting” or “retiring”) and how you know when it’s time.
They discuss a profound lesson — “sometimes you need to let go of the ‘good’ to make room for the ‘great’” — and share how they’ve applied this to both work and life.
This episode is as educational as it is heartfelt. We hope you enjoy this one.
What’s next? This will be the same show moving forward (minus one wacky co-host). We’ll cover crushing debt, saving for retirement, entrepreneurship, financial independence – a mashup of everything personal finance.
We’ll interview fascinating guests who’ve accomplished crazy, incredible things — from repaying huge debts to launching successful companies to retiring in their 30’s.
Think of this as a new beginning. And don’t worry … Jay will live in the blooper reel and guest cameo segments. You haven’t heard the last of him yet!

“Work” does that to you Jay. “Work” or that”thing”, as you call it, has turned my lifelong interest into something I now despise. Much success to you!
J. Money
Ack – sorry to hear! Hopefully you’ve been able to find something else to fulfill that part of your heart? 🙁

I’m working to become self employed. It just takes time.

Hi guys,
couldn’t let you leave Jay without sending you a message. I started listening to you guys from day one and I never commented before, but today, I had to. I will miss you Jay on this show, but will continue to read your blogs. Paula thank you for keeping the show the same; although I’m really into real estate, but I like the fact that the show will remain diverse.
Thank you, I love you both and I will miss you Jay.
Vanessa
J. Money

So sorry to see you go, Jay! Who will startle me out of my seat with bleeping now? 🙂
Don’t underestimate the value of a cohost with your upbeat and curious style. It’s great for the listeners to hear you ask the questions we’re all thinking and to feel like we’re all learning together.
That being said, I will definitely stay tuned to your blog and to Paula’s solo show and can’t wait for your first guest appearance.
Best wishes!
J. Money
Thanks Julie 🙂 I’d try and drop some curses here text doesn’t work the same! Haha… Thanks for the kind words!

BTW, I think the economist that Jay was referencing in the episode was John Maynard Keynes. He predicted that increases in productivity would mean 15-hour workweeks by our generation.
Here’s a recent article about it: https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/01/inequality-work-hours/422775/

YES YES YES! That was it!

So very sorry to hear you are leaving the show. I think the chemistry with Jay and Paula works/worked very well and I enjoyed it. I will miss you Jay. I am also very glad Paul will continue and glad she will keep it diverse. Thank you for the time you gave to the podcast and I look forward to hearing you in the future.
J. Money
Thanks Jessica 🙂 I’m glad you’ll still be sticking around!

Best episode ever! Radical honesty always deserves an award. I did get teary eyed at the start of this. THANK YOU for recording this.

Hi Paula and Jay – just got back from Camp Mustache and spending quality time with Ms. Paula where I learned that Jay was “retiring” from the money show. While disappointed, I was anxious to listen to the podcast and I found this interview very moving. Kudos to you Jay for allowing yourself to be vulnerable. I think one reason I can identify with your decision, Jay, is the incredible drive and focus that Paula demonstrates. This just might cause some challenge in comparing oneself to her. That would produce anxiety in me. Wow, Paula, you are the little engine that could! On the other hand, I identify more with Jay’s type of energy. We are all different and neither personality type is better or worse. Jay, I think your path has led you to truly knowing yourself. This authenticity will take you far on the right path for you. Paula, I’ll be listening/reading on and will continue to be inspired. I may even have to bundle up ???? Continued success to you both!
J. Money
Thanks Marla!! So cool you got to hang with Paula lately – I haven’t seen her since last year 🙂 Thanks for listening to the show and your kind words! Here’s to future success for all of us!

Just started listening about a week ago, and this is like my 8th podcast and was kinda bummed to hear your leaving J., But after listening, not so bummed now, and happy for you. Paula, this is a great podcast. Your perspective is different and especially I find your questions are so insightful. Looking forward to catching up with all the podcasts in the next month or two. J, again congrats on reaching the place where you understand what is right for. Oh, one last thing…this podcast was so good that I listened twice, and will save to listen in the future…thank you both for sharing.
J. Money
Glad you’re enjoying it 🙂 Paula’s a beast.

Started these podcasts lately. Loved the money show. Finished the podcast series until, until……..the episode where Jay left. That took me a week. I was addicted to the show by Paula and Jay. I was listening while commuting, at the gym, everywhere I could. You both did a wonderful job to keep us entertained and also provide value at the same time. After that episode, it took me more than a month to finish 4 episodes after. Its just not the same anymore. Definitely miss Jay.
I now switched back to Paula’s site for content.

Hey! Thanks for the kind words!! Just now seeing this as been M.I.A. lately with the show (obviously, haha) but just had to chime in to say thank you and so glad you enjoyed the first handful of episodes there 🙂 I’m still content with the decision, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss y’all and Paula! I had a lot of fun most of the time.

I just recently found the Afford Anything Podcast, and love it! But only just last week, went back to the 2016 episodes, and do love the vibe you both had together (still love the current show….remains one of my top 3 financial podcasts!). My favorite thing about the earlier ones is how OFTEN Paula laughs (she has a GREAT laugh!!). I’ll be walking with my headphones in and can’t help but smile when y’all start laughing. You had great chemistry, I felt….very real, authentic, down-to-earth! Just joined the Budgets Are Sexy blog, loving it too 😉

I only started listening a few weeks ago and I’m sad to see you go.
