Do you want to make money blogging? Then you’ll love today’s episode.
My co-host Jay and I share a backstage peek at the realities and opportunities behind full-time blogging.
We describe several strategies behind earning an online income, and debate the pro’s and con’s of each.
We also divulge our own stories — with real numbers.
Here are several strategies for making money online:
#1. Ad Revenue
You’ve spotted websites featuring big, ugly banner ads.
Guess how those work? You get paid a few cents for every click or every thousand impressions. You’ll need serious traffic to make money though these ads. That said, however, plenty of websites sustain that type of traffic, pulling in thousands each month.
You’ll also need to decide whether or not you want something that ugly and distracting to appear on your website. We chat about this in the episode.
#2. Affiliate Partnerships
You can partner with a company, getting a commission from every reader who purchases their product or service.
If you choose this route, follow the Golden Rule: only promote companies that you personally use and love.
#3. Sell a Product, Course, or Service
One of the best ways to make money from a blog is by building and selling your own products, courses or services.
The advantage of this approach is that you control the quality, content and user experience. You’re confident that your audience will be well-served.
The drawback, though, is that this is time-consuming. Jay and I discuss this in depth in this episode.
#4. Freelance writing
Many freelancers use their blogs to find more business.
Freelancers can build a reputation as a great writer on a given topic. They’ll then leverage that reputation into writing for other websites. The blog, in other words, turns into their marketing platform.
Jay and I have both earned $1,000+ for writing a single article, thanks to the reputations we’ve built through our respective websites.

Roy Lagro @ Band of Savers
Wow, super helpful podcast today. As a new blogger that is still trying to get this stuff figured out I needed this information. I originally wanted to start a blog for the income potential but have found that I actually care less about what I can make and more about helping others learn more about personal finances. So six months in and I actually haven’t earned anything from doing this, and haven’t even really researched much about how to monetize it, but keep at it out of the belief that some money might follow if I can actually find ways to help enough people. Thanks for the encouragements.

It means you must be having fun too – way to go 🙂 I find that a lot of the opportunities end up coming to *you* over time too, so you’ll know when things start picking up in that department.
Lord Metroid
Thank you for fixing the popping P’s.
Lord Metroid
Well, you J. Money still got some popping going on but it is considerably less than previous episode.

Not sure what we did differently, but glad it’s sounding better 🙂

I know why it sounds better. Let’s just say Steve (that guy who does stuff for Paula and Jay) is putting in some extra time “at the office” 🙂
J. Money
Looks like “Steve” is aiming for a raise in the future 😉
Carnette Eigsti
Thank you so much! This was very helpful and inspiring!! 🙂

You guys are definitely my new favorite podcast and I have you guys save on my Android home screen! I’ve been listening to you guys a lot at work because you guys make it easier to navigate the episodes, hilarious, and you’re not uberly boring! I’m glad to know it’s okay to write a post about whatever is on your mind instead of planning out the posts ahead of time since I don’t function that way. 🙁 I’m looking forward to hearing the next few episodes during my work hours! Keep up with the great work!
J. Money
Haha, awesome! Always glad to help people pass time during work hours 😉 My blog actually started at my old job on down time!
So glad you’re enjoying the show.

What bugs me is that the entire Internet seems to have become one big, commercial platform. It wasn’t always like this you know.
