The Law of Attraction says that if you think about something, youโll attract it into your life.
According to this theory, if you think about riches, youโll attract riches. If you think about happiness, youโll attract happiness. If you think about friendship, youโll attract friendship.
Of course, the Law of Attraction doesnโt explain everything. Sometimes, bad things happen to good people.
The Law canโt explain why a two-year-old gets diagnosed with cancer. It canโt explain why innocent bystanders get killed. It canโt explain genocide, slavery or terrorism. But โ to be fair โ Iโm not sure anything can explain why those tragedies occur.
In short: the Lawโs not perfect, but it IS an interesting idea.
Stop Thinking About What You Donโt Want
Hereโs the fascinating corollary to the Law of Attraction: your brain doesnโt hear the word โnot.โ
If you think: โDonโt screw up. Donโt screw up.โ โ youโll screw up.
If you think: โDonโt get sick.โ โ youโll get sick.
If you think: โIโm worried Iโll never earn enough.โ โ you wonโt.
The Law of Attraction says we should think about what we DO want, not about what we DONโT want.
Instead of โDonโt screw up,โ try saying, โI’m going to kick-butt!โ
Instead of โDonโt get sick,โ try saying, โI’m staying in prime health!โ
Instead of โWhat if Iโm always broke?,โ try saying, โIโll be wealthy soon.โ
In other words โ reframe your doubts in a positive light.
Personal development writer Steve Pavlina says he receives e-mails from people โstuck in the pattern of thinking about what they donโt want.โ
โIf I were to write a template for such emails,โ he says, โit would look something like this:
โIโm frustrated thatโฆ
โI hate myโฆ
โI canโt figure out โฆ
โIโm stressed aboutโฆ
โIโm worried thatโฆ
โI should be able toโฆ but I canโtโฆ”
These thoughts are counterproductive, he says. โYouโll negate your desires by intending their opposite.โ
In other words: Don’t focus on what you want LESS of. Focus on what you want MORE of.
Focus on Abundance, Not Scarcity
Last August I wrote about how diets are more effective if you focus on abundance, rather than deprivation.
Try telling yourself: โI shouldnโt eat sizzling bacon โฆ and fresh-baked cookies โฆ and an ice-cold beer.โ
That was counterproductive. Now Iโm hungry. What if you said:
โI love multigrain toast โฆ and fresh-caught salmon โฆ and wild blueberries.โ
Better, eh? Creating wealth is the same way:
โI shouldnโt rent a bigger home โฆ with high ceilings โฆ and a walk-in closet โฆ.โ
Ooh, but now I want it. Try this narrative instead:
โI love knowing I have $10,000 to buy my next car in cash โฆ and $5,000 in an index fund, earning money as I sleep โฆโ
Thatโs more effective.
Real-Life Examples
The Law of Attraction says that if you focus on the positive, youโll attract the positive.
The world is filled with awesome people doing incredible things — like these three people living successful, unconventional lives. Focus on that.
Final Thoughts
There will be stumbling blocks. Bad things DO happen to good people. Like I said, the Law canโt explain everything.
But there is one thing โ and perhaps ONLY one thing โ that we control: our thoughts.
And our thoughts are more powerful than we know.
